Midori no Hibi is manual gratification
In this amusing anime a juvenile delinquent awakes to hear his right hand confess her love for him. Seiji Sawamura is known as Mad Dog Sawamura and his right hand is feared as a destructive weapon. So great his bad reputation has grown that few people will talk to him instead they whisper fearfully behind his back. The truth is Sawamura isn’t a bad guy at all he is simply misunderstood. He goes to class often, he only uses violence when he is forced to, and all that he desires is to have a girlfriend like any normal seventeen year old. Unfortunately every girl he asks out refuses to date him because they think he is vicious thug. The only girl who knows the true gentle nature of Seiji Sawamura is Midori. Midori is a shy girl who has had a crush on Sawamura for several years, and not having enough courage to approach him she would only watch him from afar.
On one fateful day Seiji was in bed bemoaning his terrible luck wishing aloud that any girl would like him
when he heard a response from a female voice. He soon realised where the voice was coming from when he looked at his hand to find it replaced by a tiny naked girl. We soon find out the girl is Midori, and though she doesn’t know how she became connected to Seiji’s wrist she was happy to finally be able to confess. Seiji was reasonably upset at the inconvenience of losing his famed right hand in such an embarrassing way, but little Midori was as happy that she got to be so close to the man she loves. Seiji insisted on keeping the strange development a secret by bandaging Midori which was for the best as she was still nude, but that only led to the other students making wild rumors about how he could’ve injured his hand. Hearing that the famous Mad Dog was in a weakened state delinquents plot to exact revenge on Seiji for the savage beatings they have received from him. Seiji also must be on guard as his sister is a mischievous drunk who takes immense pleasure on torturing her little brother. He also must protect their secret from a crazy puppet fetishist who they run into while trying to buy Midori some clothing made for figurines.
The truth is Midori no Hibi is a standard romantic anime delivered in an unusual manner. I found the plot to be fairly predictable, and was annoyed that each episode ended with a monologue from Midori as she wrote in her diary. The comedy is what makes this anime worth watching. The story naturally becomes quite amusing as the situation the characters are in is very uncomfortable. Everyday things like Seiji’s porno mags, bathing, and urination become difficult but comical tasks. I did enjoy this anime, but I will never figure out why nobody seems to notice Midori hanging out of Seiji’s sleeve staring at them or at least the fact that he spends so much time talking to his hand.
